Electrical work begins

September 23rd, 2008 by Fred Weston

Stopped by after work today.  We have a front door, yay.  Also, the guest bathroom tub is in and the “bottom” of the master shower is as well.  It looks like most of the AC ducting is in place.  Light fixtures are starting to go up.  The circuit breaker is mounted in the garage and i’d estimate about 60% of the wiring is done.  Moving right along.

Slab has been poured

September 5th, 2008 by Fred Weston

Yesterday Amanda and I met with KB’s construction superintendent, Matt, who is in charge of supervising the construction of all the houses in Bayberry Lakes.  He went over all of the specifics…we caught one error on the plans (a half wall on the plans that should’ve been a full wall) and we drove by the lot afterwards and saw that they’d poured the slab.

I talked to Matt about my desire to run some conduit inside the walls before they put the drywall up.  I’d spoken to our salesman about that a while ago and he said it wouldn’t be a problem - that I’d just have to provide the materials and the electricians would do it.  Well, since he’s no longer with KB, and I’d heard that his departure was partly because he made some promises he couldn’t keep, I was a little worried that they wouldn’t let me do that now.  Matt said he had no problem with it, and said I should just go in and do it myself one night after the walls were framed and before the drywall went up…sweet!

Matt told us that the block would probably start over the weekend and that trusses would be delivered early next week, followed soon by interior walls starting to be framed.  We’re moving along now…!

Houston, we have activity!

August 31st, 2008 by Fred Weston

After a month or two of driving by our lot every now and then and wishing there was something on it that we could live in, I drove by on Wednesday and lo and behold the lot had been cleared and there was dirt compacted in the shape of a house.  I drove by again on Friday and the retaining boards that hold the concrete for the slab in place while it hardens had been set up some of the plumbing was roughed in.  We took a few pictures this afternoon on our way to dinner.  Since our camera has misplaced itself all I have are low-res Iphone pics, but they came out pretty well considering…

View from the street - the garage will be on the right, a guest room on the left and the front door in between.

This will be our backyard as viewed from the back porch.  Nice pic of yours’ truly there as well.  Damn, I am a sexy bastard :P

The plumbing there on the left is where the kitchen sink will be.

The 2×6 you can see there towards the bottom of the picture will be the back of the house, with the kitchen to the left and living room to the right.

Status Update

August 7th, 2008 by Fred Weston

Where has the time gone?  Since the last update, not much has happened other than getting loan paperwork in order.  I was talking to a colleague the other day about the process of buying a home and I think he summed up the ineptitude of all loan officers when he gave his best impression of his: “Quick, fax me an imprint of your left shoe by the end of business today so I can verify your shoe size!!!”.  My requests haven’t been so strange, but they’ve had a bad habit of requesting the same thing several times, and with so many companies involved, when one needs something from another, I find myself having to prod them along, as it’s been my experience that the employees themselves have no interest in actually completing your loan.  Since so many people have a small piece to complete in the overall process, I don’t have a central point of status checking, which is immensly frustrating.

However, I think most of that is behind us at this point.  I finally managed to get a “your loan is approved, with the condition that we have to finish up some additional minor paperwork” out of them.

I got a call last week from our new salesman, Jack, (Sean, who originally sold us the home, is no longer working there) saying that permits have all come back from city/county/etc and that construction will begin very soon.  They say that construction takes about three months, so hopefully we’ll be moving in some time around mid November.

Amanda and I drove through the neighborhood this evening to pick out some house colors we like.  Here are a few pictures from our trip:

Finishing up the loan papers

June 22nd, 2008 by Fred Weston

I’m heading over to KB today to drop off (hopefully) the last of the financial info.  That means that I should get the final home loan stuff to sign this week and then will officially be able to pay for the house.  First milestone: almost reached!
